Pepper Disaster

October 14, 2017

Well I have decided to start a blog.  After moving across the country from Seattle to Richmond I feel like I need a new career path.  Hmmm…what shall I do, florist, barista at Starbucks, back to the medical field, maybe work for a plastic surgeon.

The possibilities are endless!

I always wanted to be a chef, thought it was my artistic trait, never got that far.  Worked at Café Juanita in Kirkland, watched the chefs coming up with all these new recipes, it was fascinating I loved it.  Life had different plans for me.  My brother Ray and little sister Shana had the musical gene.  Julie and I are the cooks.  I would always be her sue chef.   I remember watching Chopped with my niece Maranda and we would try to come up with stuff to make from the basket ingredients, it’s hard.

So, while I am searching for new jobs and on unemployment I think I will cook.  Cook stuff I always wanted to try.  Perfect recipes I have made but want to be more creative.  New recipes, old recipes, simple recipes.  My husband will be my customer, my friends will be my readers.  When they come to visit us in Richmond we will all sit together at our table and enjoy some good food, wine and love.

Welcome to Sally’s Kitchen!

First recipe.  Disaster. Thank God, my husband is a patient man.

Italian Stuffed Peppers

6-8 large peppers, any color you like

1 pound hot Italian sausage

1-pound ground beef

1 jar of marinara

8 Oz cubed mozzarella cheese

½ of a sweet onion, chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

1 teaspoon basil

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

½ cup grated parmesan

1-3 teaspoons olive oil

Brown ground beef and sausage.

Cut tops off peppers and chop into small pieces.

Clean out peppers and place in a rectangle baking dish.

Add peppers and onions to meat, cook until softened about 5-6 mins, then add garlic and the spices, stir and let cook 5-6 mins, now add ½ of a jar of the marinara sauce.

Last add the cubed mozzarella cheese.  Stuff peppers with mixture, top with a spoonful of sauce and some parmesan cheese.

Add about ¾ of a cup water to the bottom of the baking dish.

Bake in a 375-degree oven for 25 mins.

Ok, this is where I screwed up.  I didn’t have enough peppers, so Chuck, my husband,  said, “I will go get 2 more peppers” so while I’m waiting I decide to heat up the water in my tea kettle to put in the bottom of the baking dish.  Turn on the water and go put the news on.

Well my apartment is small; the kitchen is practically in the living room.  I start to hear a weird popping noise, I think it’s just a little water on the bottom of the tea kettle.  Well it starts to sound weird, I go into the kitchen and see that I have turned on the wrong burner and the element is

bright red under my pan of stuffed peppers, I put on a pot holder and start to move the baking dish.  Explosion!! Glass and peppers everywhere!  I just stood there in shock for a while.  Then in comes Chuck with the other peppers.  We did not get to try the pepper recipe.

We clean everything up, vacuum, sweep, wash all the counter tops.  Chuck takes me out to dinner, we have Italian meat pizza with roasted red peppers.
